Moving its center of operations back and forth between his home in Colorado and Washington state, Wakefield never took that last step outside his emergence of a bar band despite performing throughout the West (including a showcase in L.A.'s Whiskey a Go-Go) and the Midwest with such a top list acting as Eric Burdon and Bachman-Turner Overdrive , but The Lost Warthog Tapes certainly suggests it wasn't for lack of talent. Although some of the typical excesses of the early '70s can be heard on this archival find - thinking about where the band went for heavy, silly mystical lyrics, a tendency to swap an interesting riff for a song and length for mood, disrupting a few minutes after the point of redundancy - there are also some tremendously imaginative sections on the album, and even whole songs that are worth the time it takes to listen, often the case with "lost" footage of completely unclear and unknown entities. The band's sound existed somewhere between psychedelia (numerous outstanding guitar and organ solos), acid rock, hard rock and soul-rock, best exemplified by a pair of opening songs, "Bring It On," with its impressive Chicago-style horn arrangements, jazzy solo saxophone and Latin percussion, and the tense "Something Is Coming," an explosion of harmony. Even if Wakefield has rarely been able to shape his ideas into actual songs on the rest of the album, The Lost Warthog Tapes has enough great moments to recommend it.ladislav&zivanovic..........Treklist: 01.
